eIDAS 2.0

Also known as: eIDAS 2, eIDAS Regulation

The EU regulation mandating European Digital Identity Wallets for every Member State, with verifiable-credential support baked in.

eIDAS 2.0 (the second iteration of the Electronic Identification, Authentication and Trust Services regulation) is the EU law that mandates the European Digital Identity Wallet. Every Member State must provide an EUDI Wallet implementation to its citizens; the wallet must support W3C Verifiable Credentials, OpenID4VCI for issuance, and OpenID4VP for presentation.

The regulation makes verifiable-credential infrastructure into public-sector baseline: universities, professional licensing bodies, banks, and government agencies are expected to issue and accept credentials via EUDI Wallets. This is the single largest adoption event for W3C VCs globally.

For LearnCoin, eIDAS 2.0 is the driving regulation behind our 2026-2027 EU roadmap. EUDI Wallet alignment, OpenID4VCI issuance, EBSI trusted-issuer accreditation — all of these land under the eIDAS 2.0 deployment window. Today's LearnCoin credentials are W3C VC 2.0 conformant but not yet wallet-presentable in the EUDI mode; that's the gap the roadmap closes.
